VAN: PHOTOGRAPHS OF INDIA & NEW YORK CITY SEPTEMBER 5th to 23rd OPENING RECEPTION Saturday, September 7th 6-8pm Hours: Saturday & Sunday 12pm - 5pm Weekdays by appointment only For the last several years Suchitra Van has been traveling back and forth between New York City and India creating a unique photographic dialogue between each location. His work aims to capture the beauty and movement of each location's powerful sense of daily life, movement, ritual, and identity. Through the photographs, Van also communicates his own feelings of identification with, and distance from each "native" location. His photographic attention to small details becomes of way of understanding and examining cultural and daily practices that form his own unique identity. Suchitra Van works as a photographer and architect in New York City and India and holds a B. Arch from Cooper Union. Van's photographs have appeared in exhibitions at the Chitrakaan Photo Exhibition (Mumbai, India), Swaraj Gallery @ 678 (NYC), and a major exhibition in Vienna, Austria. His current photographic project, Estrangement, is an ongoing study of his homeland, India. |
