SUCHITRA
VAN: PHOTOGRAPHS OF INDIA & NEW YORK CITY
SEPTEMBER 5th to 23rd
NG RECEPTION
Saturday, September 7th
6-8pm
Hours: Saturday & Sunday 12pm - 5pm Weekdays by appointment only
For the last several years Suchitra Van has been traveling back and forth
between New York City and India creating a unique photographic dialogue
between each location. His work aims to capture the beauty and movement
of each location's powerful sense of daily life, movement, ritual, and identity.
Through the photographs, Van also communicates his own feelings of identification
with, and distance from each "native" location. His photographic
attention to small details becomes of way of understanding and examining
cultural and daily practices that form his own unique identity.
Suchitra Van works as a photographer and architect in New York City
and India and holds a B. Arch from Cooper Union. Van's photographs have
appeared in exhibitions at the Chitrakaan Photo Exhibition (Mumbai, India),
Swaraj Gallery @ 678 (NYC), and a major exhibition in Vienna, Austria. His
current photographic project, Estrangement, is an ongoing study of
his homeland, India.
