Show notes by "Tom" Borax

this night might be what you all need instead of staying home afraid of the ides of march. for those of you who haven't been to chela, it's a great place and the hostesses there are as warm and friendly as, say, the staff at denny's, but they're sharper, more intellectual. they work hard to bring great stuff to the people of this great city.

firstly, artist chuck sehman is a fantastic and original artist, unlike anyone, yet presenting subjects we can all relate to, such as giant crabs devouring cities, ghosts trapped for eternity in townhouse blueprints, and socks that are evolved venus flytraps. chuck is like a refined nihilist, but with the mind and media resources of a ten year old. he often uses crayons and cardboard and various "crude" mediums to present humorous, deadly images, which i think still have a lot of innocence about them. he's a quiet guy who lives in the burbs with his parents. i met his grandma at one of hisngs. she didn't seem exactly "proud" of chuck, but she didn't seem at all concerned either by his bloodthirsty bunny rabbits or dinosaurs feeding on the remains of trainwreck victims. i think she understands that chuck is "special" and that's he's doing something that people like and enjoy.

also chuck designs "chuckcards". they're a bit like baseball cards, but feature such subjects as "building", "steamshovel" and "tank." pretty nice! you can buy some to trade with your pals, i guess.

i don't know what exactly chuck's going to do in the chela space, but i think it will be sad, bad, beautiful, funny and many other things. come down and see for yourself this great little-known local artist!

also this same night is the baltimore premier of two carly ptak original videos. fantastic! carly ptak, one half of nautical almanac, is also a mad scientist and scavenger of gutteral culture and an aficianado of the pockets of our civilization which are often despised and ignored, but are in fact as real as your beating heart and a whack on the funny bone of your brain. she is showing two of her films "take a look" and "funnel take", which is a "field piece" of sorts, recreating the sights, sounds, and bodily feelings of a visit to the maryland state fair. she will also be showing videos by aaron dilloway and nate young (of wolf eyes), and anthony miller.

for my portion, look for a man dressed in a rainbow exploring the possibilities of a marashino cherry suspended in a twenty pound ball of flavorless gelatin. i'll be presenting original music to accompany myself.
