The ONE NIGHT ONLY show is a coming to Baltimore! The show's 7 widely
talented and unconventional artists hail from landlocked parts of the
Midwest like Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio and are traveling West and up
the East Coast courtesy of the show's organizer, Craig Prehn.
The artists range from filmmakers to button makers and for --- One
Evening Only -- CHELA will showcase a selection of their art
and videos.
Notes from Craig Prehn:
The purpose is to introduce these artists and thier work to a larger art
community. To have a chance to see thier work in a new surroundings, and
may be gain a new perspective from the changing enviroment. The fast-paced
nature of the series is intended toup the program - and reach as
many people as possible. With what is hopefully a up-to-the-minute view
of developments taking place in the art world of the midwest.
ARTISTS:
Christen Carter: Born in Indiana,
but primarily grew up in NY state. Graduated from Indiana University with
a degree in Comp Lit in 1995. She started the Busy Beaver Button Company
that same year. She began organizing the So and So button-o-matic project
about two years which is simply about dispensing cheaply (50 cents each)
artist-designed buttons with vending machines. The button-o mattic machines

Rob Doran: Born in McHennery
IL, Has been living and working in Chicago for the last ten years. Graduated
from Columbia College with a BFA in 2000. The majority of his pieces are
works on paper. He has most recently shown at the Bucket Rider Gallery
in Chicago, The Stray Show, and The Butcher Shop.
Jim
Finn: (b. 1968, St. Louis) lives in Chicago and makes videos
using 16mm film, mini dv and vhs. His work has screened at the Rotterdam
International Film Festival, New York Underground Film Festival, Cinematexas,
and the Museo Tamayo de Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City. His films have
also appeared on the PBS show " EGG the Arts " , on the Spanish
TVE show, " Metropolis " , and in Harper's magazine. In March
2003 he co-organized the experimental Video Mundi festival at the Chicago

Craig Prehn: Born in Jackson Tennessee,
but primarily grew up in Detroit Mi. He received his BFA from the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998. He is currently living and working
primarily in Chicago IL. His work has shown at; " Magyar Fotografiai
Mzzeum " Kecskemit, Hungary, Betty Rymer Gallery Chicago IL, Beloit
College WI, Gallery 2 Chicago IL, Dogmatic Gallery Chicago IL, The Butcher
Shop Chicago IL, Ping-Schwing Los Angles CA. and most recently has contributed
work to the Version 3.0 Festival at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in
Chicago.
Dean Rank:
Born in Canton, Ohio, the home of the National Football League Hall of
Fame and studied film and video at the University of Illinois Chicago.
His work has been screened at the Thaw Film Festival in Iowa City, the
Aurora Picture Show in Houston, Blinding Light in Vancouver, Vox Populi
in Philadelphia, and the Butcher Shop Gallery in Chicago. His last project
was an experimental music video for the band Shipping News, which screened
at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio.
Tema Stauffer: Tema Stauffer
grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She graduated from Oberlin College in
1995 and received a Master's Degree in Photography from The University
of Illinois at Chicago in 1998. Some of her work in Chicago included a
project photographing dog shows throughout the Midwest, for which she
received a CAAP grant, and another project documenting the experiences
of Chicago police officers for an organization called The City 2000, whose
goal was to create a photographic archive of life in Chicago in the year
2000. Tema moved to Minnea polis, Minnesota in January, 2001.
She has since been exhibiting work in alternative art spaces in Minneapolis,
Chicago, and New York, as well as collaborating on projects with another
Minneapolis based visual artist and a minimalist music ensemble called
Smattering. One of these collaborations included a fusion of digital photography,
drawing, and sound at the Cowles Conservatory of The Walker Art Center
in July 2002. Tema is also a participant of a collective of women photographers
called Nymphoto who launched their first exhibition in New York in December,
2002. Her work has been shown at The Chicago Cultural Center, The Terra
Museum of American Art, The Musee Departmental d' Art Contemporain de
Rouchechourt, The Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts, Adrian College, The
Hyde Park Art Center, The Joymore Gallery, the Butcher Shop Gallery, and
The Gallery 400.
Wess Weaver: Born in London Kentucky,
Wess is currently drifting back and forth between Chicago and Kentucky.
Graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999.
