CHELA is an art space, created by Bonnie Jones and Jackie Milad in 2001,
featuring brave new art in film, text, images, sounds, and installations.
The space will explore sound, text, light, noise, scrapings, gesticulations
and hallucinations in the context of unrefined and unpolished, of pure
and degraded, of enlightened and impossible.
In July of 2003, the CHELA Collective was formed as the main organizing
group for the space. In addition, part of the main studio was converted
into 4 artist studios. By forming the collective andng the space
to artists, we hope to create a space and a community where ideas, art,
and invention has free play.
CHELA is a do it yourself space that focuses on the art/ideas
of emerging performers, artists, writers, etc. who may not have previously
had a venue for their work. That said, we also show established artists
who might be well-known, less-loved, admired, feared or otherwise.
Above all, we aim to be an communal art space, rather than a commercial
and/or professional gallery. All door goes to performers, and all artists,
collective members, and audience should have equal roles in the exhibitions
and performances.
Art is for everyone, right?
We're always interested in performances, show ideas, and other events
that are refreshing and unique. If you're interested in having a performance
or exhibition at CHELA, please take a look at previous shows to get an
idea of what we do at the space. Then send us your press kit/ portfolio
(slides, photos, etc), bios/CVs/resumes, a description of your work, and
contact information with an SASE (if you'd like your stuff back)
